The VILLUM FOUNDATION's Young Investigator Programme
Applications are hereby invited for the third round of the VILLUM FOUNDATION's Young Investigator Programme.
The Programme is aimed at especially talented young researchers in science and technology and is intended to support them in establishing their own, independent research profiles. Funds may be applied for by individual researchers who are engaged in basic science and technology research. The Programme does not comprise health science, medical or biomedical research. Information about the two first rounds funding awards: Dk Eng
Applications may be made within the following two categories:
Associate professors
Associate professors who have gained permanent tenure within the last 3 years may apply for up to DKK 7 million for a period of up to 5 years with a view to funding postdoctoral researchers, PhD students, equipment, technician assistance, and other customary project expenses. Own salary costs are not eligible. Associate professors who do not hold permanent tenure must be able to document that they will hold their appointment for the duration of the project period. For applicants with the prospect of taking up an associate professorship within the near future, a conditional application may be submitted.
Postdoctoral researchers
Researchers at postdoctoral or assistant professor level may apply for up to DKK 4 million for a period of up to 3 years with a view to financing own salary, junior postdoctoral researchers, equipment, technician assistance, and other customary project expenses. Financing of PhD students is not an eligible expense. Applicants in this category are required to have at least 1 year's postdoctoral research experience.
Qualifications
Importance will be attached to relevant international experience such as research stays abroad and proof of qualifications through previous research. Importance will also be attached to the future potential embodied by the projects in terms of the latest research in the field, and the capacity of the projects to turn out future researchers.
No age limit applies, but the ideal applicant is in his or her thirties. Allowance will be made for periods of leave, including maternity leave. The Foundation will give preference to candidates who have not previously been given a similar opportunity for boosting their research career.
The project must be conducted at a Danish research institution. Foreign researchers may apply, but must already be attached to a Danish research institution at the time of application.

Processing of applications
Applications will initially be considered by a panel of experienced research managers (see list of panel members: Dk Eng). The best qualified applicants will be invited to attend interviews to be held in November. Applicants who are not invited to attend interviews should expect to receive a letter of rejection in late October. On the panel's recommendation, the board of the VILLUM FOUNDATION will make its final funding awards decisions on 21 December 2013. Applicants will be notified shortly thereafter. The funding awards will be conferred at an official event on 23 January 2014, after which the projects may be commenced.
Please note that detailed feedback is not provided for unsuccessful applications.
